About Us

Rémi Parmentier, Kelly Rigg, Elaine Lawrence and Clifton Curtis have been campaigning for disarmament, sustainable development, and the protection of the environment and human health for over 30 years with expertise in:

- Political Campaigning / Advocacy: campaigns which integrate public activities and targeted communication strategies with efforts behind the scenes to influence international environmental law and policy.

- Senior management, staff coaching, conflict resolution, strategic planning, project management and evaluation.

- Policy analysis, speech writing and public presentations, communications and media work, lobbying.

- Event organising: internal meetings and major public events.

Working (fluent) languages of the Varda Group are English, French and Spanish (and to a lesser extent, Dutch).

With more than thirty years of involvement in the environmental movement, Rémi has known and worked with many of the key players in environmental policy including senior staff at the UN and other intergovernmental organizations, government ministers and representatives, NGO leaders, journalists, and independent policy experts.

Kelly Rigg
Kelly, a founding Director of the Varda Group, has a unique experience in the management, facilitation and administration of complex international projects and campaigns. She is the co-ordinator of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition, an alliance of over 60 NGOs world-wide set up to support the adoption and implementation of a UN General Assembly moratorium on high seas bottom trawling. She led the Greenpeace campaign to save Antarctica in the 1980s, and the organisation's efforts in 2002 in the run-up to the Johannesburg Earth Summit. She played a major role in the establishment of the Greenpeace Amazon campaign in the mid 1990s, including efforts to raise funds for the establishment of a base of operations in Manaus, Brazil. She has served in numerous senior management positions, and has provided strategic direction to a wide variety of international organisations. She also acts as the business manager for the Varda Group.

Elaine Lawrence
Elaine Lawrence joined the Varda Group in 2004 as a director following a successful and varied career in Greenpeace. In her 26 years with Greenpeace Elaine has worked as a campaigner, International Campaign Co-ordinator, Campaign Director of both Greenpeace UK and Greenpeace International, Chair of the Boards of Greenpeace Sweden and Greenpeace UK, Deputy Executive Director and acting Communications Director of Greenpeace International. Elaine is an outstanding facilitator. She has prepared and facilitated a large number of international meetings for many organisations, including Board meetings and large AGMs as well as focussed groups.

Clifton Curtis
For over 30 years, Clif Curtis has been using policy, scientific, legal and political advocacy skills and expertise to protect the environment and human health - internationally and in the U.S. - crafting international treaties, national laws, court submissions, special reports and other actions, and working with high-level decision makers and experts in the public, private, NGO and scientific sectors from around the world.

Upon joining the Varda Group as a director in March 2006, Clif became Project Director for the Antarctic Krill Campaign, an exciting, new marine biodiversity initiative coordinated by The Pew Charitable Trusts, a US-based foundation, in cooperation with several funders. Having directed that important initiative full-time during its start up and first year of engagement with key Antarctic fisheries treaty parties, Clif departed the Trusts on July 31st, 2007, and he now works full-time as a Varda Group director.”

Alex Garcia Wylie
Alex joined the Varda Group as research assistant in December 2004, shortly after graduating from the University of East Anglia (UK), where he studied in the School of Environmental Sciences.

Since joining the Varda Group, Alex has carried out a number of tasks including: organisational assistance and web master for the Assembly on Labour and the Environment (WILL2006) at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, and the Pew sponsored Symposium on the State of the Conservation of Whales in the 21st Century held at UN Headquarters, NY; logistician and rapporteur at meetings of the Shark Alliance; communications strategy and website developer for Zaragoza EXPO2008’s Pavilion of Citizen Initiatives. Alex also took a part in the design of strategic campaign plans on Whales Conservation, Aviation and Climate Change and Mediterranean Blue Fin Tuna.


Currently working in Madrid with Rémi Parmentier, Alex is also responsible for day to day IT assistance, maintaining our website and investigating the application of new software tools into the work of the Varda Group. A native Spanish and English speaker, he also employs part of his time as an on-site translator for Theatre and Dance productions in Madrid.
