Elaine Lawrence joined the Varda Group in
2004 as a director following a successful
and varied career in Greenpeace. In her 26
years with the organisation Elaine has worked
as a campaigner, international campaign co-ordinator,
Campaign Director of both Greenpeace UK and
Greenpeace International, Chair of the Board
of Greenpeace Sweden and Greenpeace UK, Deputy
Executive Director and acting Communications
Director of Greenpeace International. Elaine
is also an experienced facilitator, having
prepared and facilitated a large number of
international meetings for Greenpeace, including
annual meetings of the Executive and Campaign
Directors of the organisation.
As a result she has gained experience and
expertise in a wide range of areas including
project and personnel management, organisation,
mediation and crisis management, coaching,
facilitation, governance oversight, project
evaluation and mutual personnel review talks.
Elaine’s campaign responsibilities have
included co-ordination of Greenpeace’s
response to the nuclear reactor accident at
Chernobyl, development of the campaign programme
of Greenpeace UK including the re-establishment
of its nuclear campaign, evaluation of some
of Greenpeace’s major international
projects including the 1995 Moruroa and Brent
Spar campaigns, and oversight of international
campaigns on climate change, nuclear and disarmament
issues, and genetic engineering.
Her experience in organisational change and
management processes includes the rebuilding
of basic departmental systems at Greenpeace
International during her time as Campaign
Director; oversight of approximately half
of Greenpeace International’s operations
(including the Campaigns, International Marine
and Actions, Communications and Political
& Science Departments) as Deputy Executive
Director and a central role during a major
re-organisation of Greenpeace International
in 2003.
